I have been reading a lot of books about “green” living, which seems to be the latest trend and people are jumping on the bandwagon en masse. I counted at least 8 books on a single table at Indigo Books the other day.
My latest read was Green for Life by Gill Deacon, who I have seen in the role of talk show host here in Canada.
Here are a few interesting ideas for environmentally healthy cleaning products, taken from her book:
AUTOMATIC DISHWASHER DETERGENT:
1 Tablespoon each of baking soda and borax
Use vinegar as a rinsing agent
FLOOR CLEANER:
water and a microfibre mop
SPRAY DISINFECTANT FOR COUNTERS:
10 drops each lavender and tea tree essential oils in water for a naturally antiseptic and antifungal that smells great
STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCE CLEANER:
mild dish soap on a damp microfibre cloth, rinse and re-wipe
SPRAY STARCH:
2 Tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 3 cups water in a spray bottle
STICKY IRON:
make a paste with baking soda or
sprinkle table salt on white paper and iron over it
I haven’t tried any of these yet, but they sound great. I am a bit skeptical about the automatic dishwasher concoction, but I am going to give it a try!
