This film is coming to Toronto May 20, at the Cumberland 4 Cinema near Bay and Bloor. The film addresses medical research done by notable physicians Dr. T Colin Campbell (author of The China Study), Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn (who was instrumental in Bill Clinton becoming vegan, losing weight and halting his heart disease) and many others.
Forks Over Knives presents evidence of the extremely detrimental health consequences of the standard American diet, especially the obsession with abundant animal protein. Meat is believed to be the only valid source of protein, dairy is equated with calcium and both are considered by most people as essential to our well-being. However, if that were the case, why is the general health of the people living in North America continuing to decline? Why are the countries with the highest intake of dairy products (with Canada being one of them) also the places where the rates of osteoporosis are the highest?
Most people would rather dig their own grave with their fork than change their diet. What we eat is so tied up in tradition, celebration, habit and wrong beliefs that it is hard for people to see any other way and to realize that there is a whole world of delicious food available to us when we stop thinking of a huge slab of meat as the centrepiece of our plate.
