Soon you this will have no power over you at all! |
I have been down this sugar detox path before and wanted to provide you with my top tips for eliminating those cravings for sugary treats.
1. If you are full and content, you won’t be craving sugar so make sure you are eating enough protein, veggies and good fats. When your cells are getting all the nutrition they need, they won’t be asking for more and more empty calories! Depending on your diet (I am primarily vegetarian) some of these foods could include avocado, raw nuts and seeds, organic eggs and yogurt, natural goat or sheep milk or raw cheese, beans and sprouts.
2. Make sure you are hydrated! Sometimes, if you are not drinking enough water (and remember that caffeinated drinks can actually be dehydrating so they don’t count) you may experience thirst as hunger pangs and cravings for not so good for you foods.
3. Try and cut out all sweet tasting foods for the first week. That includes fruit and “healthy” sweeteners like raw honey, dates and maple syrup and even stevia (an all natural herb) in order to re-train your taste buds to appreciate the subtle sweetness in all foods. Once you have done this for awhile, many previous favorites, like a cupcake for instance, will taste overwhelmingly and sickeningly sweet. After the first week, try adding back some fruit, but proceed with caution. Low sugar choices, like berries and apples are the best choices.
4. Eliminate completely all white, processed foods made from wheat flour since these foods are converted into glucose in your body so rapidly they might as well be sugar!
5. Cut way back on coffee – eliminate it for at least a week if you can stand it. I find a cup of coffee makes me start looking around for something sweet to keep it company. Instead, acquire a taste for tea of all kinds. I like green or white teas for the antioxidants but after about 2 pm I start drinking some of my favorite herbal concoctions instead.
