Kensington Market !

Today I went on a field trip to Kensington Market in the heart of Toronto. Located near Spadina and College, you would swear you were in another country if you didn’t know any better.

One of my favorite vegan restaurants is located here. If you have not visited Urban Herbivore yet, get yourself down there and enjoy a delicious grain bowl for lunch. The serving size is huge – I only ate about half and took the rest home for later.

I think my favorite sauces so far are the lemon tahini and carrot sesame ginger – yum! I had both on my bowl of red lentils and quinoa (fabulous protein combination) topped with sesame tempeh, broccoli, grape tomatoes, chickpeas, grilled vegetables and some spicy seitan strips. Toasted sliced almonds and pumpkin seeds on top added a nice crunch. Super yummy and nutritious. Other alternatives for the grains are a combination of green lentils and millet or a rice combination. The choice of toppings is immense and seems to vary depending on when you drop by. The price is very reasonable for what you get – only $8.50 including all taxes.

Urban Herbivore also serves delicious salads, sandwiches and other savory treats. There are also ginormous (yes, I know this is not a correct word, but it just works here) spelt muffins with chunks of apple and cranberries and other baked goods for those with a sweet tooth looking for a healthy snack. A cooler showcases some of the delicious dressings to take home.

Sadly, the photo I took of my bowl was super blurry so I won’t inflict it on you. Instead, here are some shots of the hood.

    Hi Chet,

Fressen used to be my favorite restaurant until they changed their menu format. They used to have a delicious gluten roast with red wine sauce and tons of beautifully presented vegetables.
I still like Fressen though and I am kind of off gluten these days anyhow.

They have a nice brunch there. If you have time to go through my archives and scroll back, I previously posted a review of Fressen with a photograph of my breakfast!
